"We're not all bad, and we resent the implication we are."

I agree. Not everyone is guilty of the offenses I described. I regret I did not provide a disclaimer in the original article expressing how I really feel: There are a lot of very good people in IT. Some of my generalizations were too broad, and I apologize to anyone I offended. "You must really hate people in IT." Actually, most of my best friends work in IT (cue the "a loser like you has friends?" jokes in 3...2...1...NOW!). The fact is, I think the people in the IT profession - network administrators, system admins, DBAs, system architects, programmers, the whole lot - have a great deal to offer everyone. IT is a young industry, just now starting to mature, and it will continue to be vitally important. But businesses are skeptical of the value IT brings, and like every department, IT must constantly prove its worth. The more contentious, difficult and aloof IT employees are, the greater the disservice they do to themselves and their co-workers in the field. Taking a hard look at how the industry behaves is a big step forward. "Tagging" the article that suggests you do that with f***off is not. |
